Roadcheck 2015 set for June 2-4

Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance has announced this year's schedule for International Roadcheck, the annual nationwide inspection of commercial motor vehicles.

The 72-hour event will be held June 2 - 4, 2015. CVSA-certified inspectors will perform approximately 70,000 inspections on trucks and buses at 1,500 inspection points around the country.

The special emphasis for International Roadcheck 2015 is cargo securement. The subject was chosen to remind drivers and carriers that proper loading and securing of cargo on vehicles is a matter of public safety. Regulations require drivers to stop within the first several miles of a trip to recheck load securing equipment for loads that are not sealed or otherwise inaccessible.

Although cargo safety is this year's theme, inspectors will continue to primarily conduct the full 37-step Level I inspection. The Level I inspection is the most thorough roadside examination on the books and includes an evaluation of both the vehicle and the driver. The top items inspectors will be examining consist of brakes, coupling devices, fuel and exhaust systems, trailers, lighting, securement of cargo, steering, suspension, tires, wheels, rims and hubs. To see the full list of inspection items, visit www.cvsa.org.

International Roadcheck 2014 resulted in a vehicle out-of-service rate of 18.7 percent and a driver-out-of-service rate of 4.8 percent. The benefits of the annual roadchecks has been drastic over the years. Since 1988, the procedures have estimated 318 lives saved and 5,840 injuries avoided. It also provides the opportunity to educate the industry and public about the importance of safe commercial vehicle operations.
